From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Eagle Elite series…

Every family has rules, the mafia just has more....
Do not speak to the bosses unless spoken to.
Do not make eye contact unless you want to die.
And above all else, do not fall in love.
Renee Cassani's future is set.
Her betrothal is set.
Her life, after nannying for the five families for the summer, is set
Somebody should have told Vic Colezan that.
He's a man who doesn't take no for an answer.
And he only wants one thing.
Her.
Somebody should have told Renee that her bodyguard needed as much discipline as the kids she was nannying.
Good thing Vic has a firm hand.

Yes!! We've got a new novella from one of my favorite mafia series, Eagle Elite series. Envy follows Vic Colezan Abandonato, Nixon's cousin. As the silent assassin, he swore an oath to protect his family and he never disobeyed it. Renee Cassini is his temptation. She's a college student and the mafia families' nanny for the summer. She has a crush on Vic but his lifestyle is completely different from hers. Normal and free from violence.

Vic and Renee's undeniable attraction was forbidden. Vic is her bodyguard and Renee is betrothed to another powerful mafia family. Lines are blurring and nothing can stop these two from loving each other. I enjoyed this novella. It's lighthearted and sweet. After these changes I wish Renee continues her studies. She's young, smart and industrious. She has a bright future ahead.

Sidenote: I miss the entire mafia family. They're protective with each other and their family dinners are hilarious! I miss Chase's dark humor and of course my favorite, Sergio. I'm excited for the upcoming books in this series and I bet it's Andrei Petrov's turn.

Title: Envy (Eagle Elite #9.5;  1001 Dark Nights #83)
Author: Rachel Van Dyken
Genre: Mafia, Romance

ARC
I feel like a broken record but I will say it again, I have read my fair share of mafia/organised crime related romance books but this series will forever be one of my favourite! The Elite Series is on a league of it's own and if you haven't had the pleasure of reading it..I must insist you start them now.

Envy is a novella but can be read as a standalone.. but once again I must insist you read the other books first to fully appreciate the story of each character... it will also make you love these characters as much as I have come to love.
At this point, I would like to point out that this review is spoiler free... except to entice you into the fact that Renee and Vic's chemistry is unbelievable intense! It's crazy to think that this is a novella because the it feels complete! It packs a punch and to simply put - so so so good!

Don't laugh but for me, Envy, felt like a warm hug that was long overdue.hahaha Meaning, I missed these characters: missed their craziness, their dedication, their loyalty and their presence.

The Elite series, for me, is irreplaceable , incomparable and addictive!

I hope you give Envy a chance because it is brilliant!5star

Holy Guacamole! This is the reason why I love all things Mafia and Rachel Van Dyken. She's a woman of words and brilliancy. I don't know how she does it but this is just WOW! With it's perfect pace, and scenes that had me at the edge of my seat, I had a hard time putting this book down. Envy, is Mafia at it's finest, and the good thing? It's never a novella. It's a 236 pages book you'll get to savor, devour and fall in love.

Renee and Vic's journey was one I was highly anticipated and Rachel Van Dyken did not disappoint. In fact, it was more than I could ever thought it would be. Sure I played favorites with her Mafia hero's but Vic' s was different. I was head over heels in love with him. His struggles to stay true to his oath and choosing Renee made me even root for him more. I love it. I love their chemistry. There's just something about them that pulled me in immediately. Them together is intense and bloody satisfying. It was all sorts of teasing and HOT! It was forbidden-ish but oh boy I love how it's portrayed. It keeps me guessing what will happen next. I wasn’t just entertained but I was moved to the core with this journey.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. If you have an insatiable appetite when it comes to Mafia goodness, one click this book. For those who haven't checked RVD's Mafia series, it's a great book to start. For us long time fans and lovers, Indeed it was a bonus.

Keep rocking RVD!

Hot damn! Every time I read about Nixon, Chase, Tex, Sergio, Phoenix it's like coming home.. Is that weird? They do feel like family! Maybe because I spent a lot of time with them or maybe I'm crazy. The judge is still out.

I like nanny stories and I love Rachel her mafia books! So it wasn't really a surprise I loved this one..

What can I say?
It isn't a novella so it isn't short it's good and long!
Steamy moments!
Cute little kiddies
Mob business
We get to see Nixon, Chase, Tex, Sergio, Phoenix and the wives again. How frickin awesome is that?

If I haven't convinced you yet then I'm a failure..

I did not think I even liked Vic when he was introduced in Eulogy. I can admit now that I was so wrong. I fell for this broody, protector, assassin, and enforcer. The made man figuring out his heart still worked. He didn't feel good enough and has real reasons to hold back. But he was also lonely, struggling, and conflicted.

And his source of conflict was the nanny, Renee...the younger, college-aged woman he was supposed to protect. But seeing how he was pulled towards her and trying to fight it just got to me.

Renee is sweet, innocent, and keeps her head and eyes down. She's counting down the days to when she can leave her mafia kids nanny job and go back to school. She is intimidated by all the dangerous men, including Vic.

But once he proves that he truly plans on being her protector, she sees him as more of a man. And their chemistry and need start to ramp up. They are supposed to fight it as it is a forbidden situation, but the temptation is great.

But she doesn't know all the secrets...his, theirs, or even ones that pertain to her. There is a lot going on under the surface and it seems to be on a "need to know" basis.

Vic has sworn an oath and duty to the family and ignoring that could get him or someone else hurt or killed. And just being around her seems to be a distraction. But her light keeps pulling him away from his darkness.

There are several underlying variables in play. There is danger and tension. There are secrets, lies, and hidden agendas. It's hard to know who to trust and what are the lesser of two evils.

And Vic is caught in the middle between duty and (what could be) love. Is there a way to keep her safe and somehow manage to get the girl he does not think he deserves?

This novella is a mysterious, suspenseful, sexy, forbidden love story. It can be read as a little intro in to this world, but I freakin love this series and highly recommend it. I got totally sucked right back into it all and these crazy, intense, unfiltered characters. They have no boundaries. I love their bickering, threats, witty banter, and taunting of each other. They are a dangerous, cunning, and loyal group. But crossing them is definitely not advised.

I am addicted and am looking forward to more books in this series. Maybe even a Russian? If she keeps writing them, I will keep reading them.

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

4 Sweet stars

I'm devouring this series like a drug, and I'm addicted. This was a quick read where we get to see our silent and broody Vic fall in love, and it was absolutely amazing. Renee is introduced in this book, and she's the nanny to the children in The Family. She isn't unfamiliar with the Mafia world; her dad is a made man, but still, she fears the bosses, especially the silent man, Vic.

Vic's attention has slid towards the beautiful nanny plenty of times, but he knows she's off-limits for many reasons. And he's taken an oath; protect the bosses. No distraction. Nothing. So when Renee is attacked in her own home and is sent to live with Nixon, that oath is threatened. She's everywhere and his need to protect her increase by the minute. She unhinges him.

I adored Vic; he was such a loyal man but conflicted when it came to his feelings for Renee and the oath. Renee was such a great match for him, although she was scared of the bosses, and at first of Vic, she knew this world and still wanted Vic as much as he wanted her.

I've fallen in love with almost every man in this series, yes kind of also with Andrei and that man is truly sick. RVD has delivered excellence through these books, and I would seriously recommend this series.

Renee knew the rules for working for the bosses. She grew up in the life, but protected from the worst dangers. Now that she is working as a nanny for the bosses’ families she finds herself right in the middle of the danger. Her course is set, her future is set. She is protected.

Vic made an oath to the families, one that he has not had any trouble keeping, until she became part of his duties. Renee challenged him in a way he had not experienced yet. And she just might be worth breaking an oath over.

I loved the forbidden aspect of the story and the struggles the characters face because of their places within the family. Vic’s own struggle and decisions over the course of the book had me falling for him fast and hard. He seemed so closed off at first, that I had a hard time finding what Renee saw in him, but as they spent more time in close quarters I saw it too.

Renee (as with all the women in this series) is a strong, if young, heroine. She may not know everything that goes on with the families, but she knows enough and is smart enough to know she doesn’t want to know more. She struggles with the violence that is so commonplace in their day to day, but also realizes that it is the way it has always been.

For those who may not have experienced Rachel’s mafia world yet, this is a great place to jump in and test the waters. It has all the elements I have come to expect in the Elite series, but without a whole lot of need for the extensive backstory created in the earlier books of the series. Yes, there will be some spoilers, but this only glosses over a handful of major incidents and is a great introduction to the families and their lifestyle.

Envy brings the reader back to the world of the Cosa Nostra with all the mafia guys. If you haven't read the series, you could read this as a stand alone; however, I don't think you will appreciate the story as much if you don't have all the history. Vic was introduced in Eulogy but was a very minor character. Renee is a totally new character to the series.

Renee is the nanny for Nixon and Trace's daughter, Serena, and Phoenix and Bee's son, Junior. She is terrified of the bosses. Her father is a made man and has been working with the families her whole life, but she is still not comfortable with the death and destruction. Vic makes her REALLY uncomfortable. He is an enforcer for the 5 families and always looks pissed off. Renee thinks she only has a few more days before she heads back to college...then her whole world changes.

Vic is the quintessential broody grump. Even though he is an Abandanado, he works for the families and has to take orders from the bosses. His newest assignment is to keep Renee safe and keep her in the dark about who she really is. Renee is determined to break through Vic's shell and I admired her tenacity. I liked that she wasn't a blushing virgin; its odd for me to say that, isn't it! But, she needed to be a bit confident and self assured in order to push Vic's buttons. And once they finally get on the same page?! Holy hotness!

But the ending? Oh my gosh. I had no idea the depravity that Andrei was involved in and it really shocked me. If you have triggers, you might want to check the warning below.

Envy is a great addition to the Eagle Elite series for readers who, like me, are always begging for more mafia men. This is my favorite RVD series and I devoured Envy in one sitting because there was no way I was gonna stop until it was over!

POV: dual 1st
Tears: yes
Trope: mafia, secret identity
Triggers:
Series/Standalone: stand alone within an interconnected series

Lev by Belle Aurora, Midnight Rescue by Elle Kennedy, Judgment Road by Christine Feehan...then you will probably like Envy!

I don’t think I will ever have my fill of this Mafia goodness that RVD delivers. Book after book she feeds my addiction for all things Eagle Elite and I will never get enough of these characters.

They are seriously unhinged at times in the best way possible but then again I would expect nothing less from this crime family. I mean only these guys would yell at one another for swearing in front of the kids while waving a gun in the air.

One minute they are doing the worst things imaginable and the next minute they are making jokes. I can’t handle this crew I love them way too much.

Of course with each book we get a couple that is intense and the story is never black and white. There’s always something unexpected around the corner that you just know is gonna have you gripped and freaking out about.

Seriously my fav mafia romance books ever. I never want this series to end. EVER !!

I have been anxiously awaiting since last summer to have more of Vic's storyline. While he is new to the EE family, his character immediately fascinated me. RVD delivers another fast paced, thrilling installment to her best series. Despite being over nine plus books, I never seem to tire of this world.

This is written as a stand alone for Dark Nights and is a perfect introduction to those who want to start this series but feel overwhelmed with the large amount of previous works. RVD does a good job of recapping key events and characters, so new readers understand the complex dealings.

There is a perfect balance of suspense, action, emotion, and humor (it is RVD after all). I especially enjoyed seeing Nixon and Chase with larger roles. They are the reason I first fell in love with this series, and it's endearing to see them more active again.

My only complaint...I wanted it to be longer! It is only contracted to be a novella, but I could have easily read 100 more pages of the interaction between Vic and Renee. They have an intense chemistry that made the book even more engaging that I anticipated.

I will be counting the days until the next installment for this beloved series. Blood in...no out.

*Thank you to RVD for my advanced review copy.

"I had no heart or soul to give her—I'd already sworn it to the families. Besides, what use did I have for fairytales?"

What a brilliant idea the 1001 Dark Nights is. I really appreciate the opportunity to dip my toe in the water to see if I will like a series by trying it out with one of these shorter stories that can be read as a standalone and an introduction to a series. And I must say, I more than liked it.

Renee is working as a nanny for the summer for the families. She just biding her time, waiting to go to college in the fall. Being around the mafia men is stressful for her. They frighten her with their fierceness and she knows not to cross them. And then there's Vic. She feels his eyes on her... all the time.

Vic knows she's off-limits, but he can't help himself. His favorite thing to do on and off duty is to watch the nanny. Sometimes, he's ordered to keep an eye on her, and other times he's unable to take his eyes off the nanny. "It hurt like hell knowing that a woman like that would never look twice at a man like me."

Renee would be graduating from college this year. And then her future would begin. She's been anxious to get away from the tight control of the families, ready to stretch her wings. But she can't deny that she's drawn to him. She should be focused on the rest of her life, but instead, she's focused on him. She knows what he does. But she still wants him, darkness and all. "Though if any sin was worth committing—it would be him."

Yup, you guessed it. It was H-O-T. The forbidden, hopeless, uncontainable lust they had for each other was seeping out of their pores. Vic felt helpless with envy as he protected her, knowing that she was promised to someone else. The author managed to pack a punch in this story and now she has my appetite whetted for more in the Eagle Elite series. I really want to get to know some of the characters I met better, especially Andrei. The line forms here...

This novella is book 9.5 in the Eagle Elite series. As a 1001 Dark Nights novella – this is designed to be a little shorter and serves as an “intro” to the author for those unfamiliar or a “bonus” for long time fans. I’ve read all of the Eagle Elite books, so I’m not unbiased, but I think it is a good “taste” of the series and VanDyken’s style.

Vic was introduced in Eulogy, but you don’t have to read that to enjoy him here. (But you SHOULD read Eulogy, because it was the best of the series!)

Envy is a novella, so the speed of the relationship is quick – but I felt like it worked here and was well done. Vic & Renee were both developed & intriguing characters. They’re cute as a couple and I couldn’t help but root for them.

We also get a tiny more about Andrei – definitely setting up for his book, Debase.

Narration:
I only listened to this once. I’ve read it multiple times. I’m disappointed that Scarlet Chase was cast AGAIN. I love her as a narrator (Blacktop Cowboys series is phenomenal), but she definitely has a “mature” voice which doesn’t fit with the 19-24yo characters she keeps narrating. Additionally, one of the things that I’ve loved about this series is that each character has his/her own voice throughout the series because the narrators changed depending on the POV. However, Scarlet Chase has been the female lead for Enrage, Eulogy, & Envy and David Benin has been the lead in Eulogy & Envy as well as narrating a DIFFERENT character in Enrage.

I’ll keep pre-ordering the e-books, but I’m losing faith in the audiobooks.

ENVY by Rachel Van Dyken is book 9.5 Eagle Elite; and 83 1001 Dark Nights. This is the story of Renee Cassani and Vic Colezan. I thought this to be a standalone book.
Renee is born in the mafia but doesn't want to be a part of it but really has no choice. Vic is a bodyguard for the family but he also wants Renee. But Renee has been designated to marry someone else although not know at first. Their love wasn't supposed to be but that didn't stop it from happening.
Quick exciting story...loved it!

If you love mafia romance, this is a must read in Rachel Van Dyken’s mafia world and it’s a standalone, so even if you haven’t read her Eagle Elite series before, you can enjoy this one...but one is never enough, so fair warning, you’ll want to read them all after this!

RVD’s mafia men are violent monsters that somehow she makes totally swoon worthy at the same time, and Vic is no exception! This is a taboo love story, one that doesn’t feel like it could possibly have a happy ending. I feel like every Eagle Elite book written gets grittier and darker and more violent, which is somehow perfect and necessary to the series. I loved the intensity and the suspense, but of course there was the usual humorous banter and teasing between these characters that I’ve grown to love.

Renee has been raised in a mafia family but wants no part of that life. She goes to college and while at home during the summer is the nanny for Nixon and Phoenix’s kids. She’s kept a low profile and is of no importance, or so she thinks. Vic has taken an oath to protect the family which includes watching over Renee. He knows how important she is, but she’s also become especially important to him. This whole storyline was intriguing and incredibly brutal on my romantic heart who kept hope that there was an HEA!

Another gripping love story amongst the world of the Eagle Elite. Renee and Vic’s tale is a quick yet intense one of a sort of forbidden love. Renee’s unaware of her role in the Cosa Nostra and lives day to day as a college student and Nanny, but things get nail-bitingly serious when her life is threatened and Vic is the one man who’d give his life for her and anyone in the families. He’s sworn an oath to protect everyone at all costs...including his future.

The sexual tension, passion and amoré between Vic and Renee is quite combustible. He swore he’d stay away but his desire for her is much stronger than the path he swore and she’s not willing to let him give that up.

This was a great novella and a wonderful addition to the Eagle Elite series. Packed with heat, action and suspense it has everything I could have wanted in this story.

the Eagle Elite series is one of my favorite series and don't think I could ever get tired of it! the only thing I wish for the series is for it be an epic interconnected series that sees the growth and changes to all the main characters, instead of just a series of stand-alone, but that just me and I'll still take what I can get.

Envy was another fun addition to the series. I loved both Vic and Renee and thought they were the perfect match for each other. There's was a forbidden love and loved the tension between the two as they tried to fight the feelings for each other and it was great to watch them lose.

This novel really set up Andrei's book and can't wait to see where this series heads next and all I say is it will be dark, but I'm along for the ride.

ARC Received for an honest review

I am a fan of these 1001 short stories - it gives us a glimpse into where some favourite characters are now, or gives us a story of characters that were only minor players in other books.

If you have read Rachel Van Dyken's Eagle Elite series (and if you haven't, you should!) you have met our main man Vic.

We know what Vic is capable of from previous stories, however we don't know Vic. He plays by the rules, no matter what it costs him.

Renee is sweet and adorable, however we soon come to learn who and what she is and how strong she can be.

My heart hurts for Vic as he sets about doing his "duty". I love the guys of Eagle Elite, but boy I really do kind of hate them in this at the same time. Expecially that Dick-son - oops, I meen Nixon.

I love the Vic and Renee go for what they want. And oh my do they steam up my kindle!

I love getting to see a little of all the family and the "families" in Envy. I have been invested in their lives for a lot of years now, and I always want to know more. And my Chase plays quite an important part in Envy woohoo!

This was a great little read, just enough to tide me over until we get more full length EE.

I can't wait to see what Ms Van Dyken brings me next.

I was hooked from the first chapter and read in one sitting.

What a dilemma Vic was in. Vic was sworn into the mafia family to protect, to focus on his job as the enforcer, he was to be celibate with no distractions, he was a lethal weapon for the family and whoever needed him but at the end of the day, he was also just a man.
Vic was drawn to the nanny Renee, a member of the mafia family who was watching over Nixon and Trace's daughter, Serena, her own father is part of the mafia family and she is helping out until she goes to college. Vic tried to fight off his feelings for Renee, failure would mean punishment for breaking his vow by blood to the family, but the need and desire becomes too much even for a man as hard and fierce as Vic Abandanado.

I haven't read all this series and regardless of that I didn't feel like there was anything I missed, the plot was solely focused on the two characters and their story, it did, however, have me wanting to know more about all the secondary characters and what their history was and who they were. I can see this series being highly addictive to a mafia romance lover like myself, it was a perfect mix of danger, hotness and mafia madness, with twists and turns, it also had humor in certain parts of the plot to lighten the mood and help it feel real, I loved it.

A really good mafia read, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the characters and I am certainly going to check out more books in this series. Although this is classed as a novella with over 20 chapters you sure do get a good read.

1001 Dark Nights is a brilliant idea for readers and authors. It really does give you the opportunity to experience a book from a series that can be read as a standalone and introduces you to a series. I loved it.

I really don't know what to say about this book or this series because how do you take something that's already fabulous and make it even more fabulous? I have no idea either but Rachel Van Dyken does and she does it with what seems like total ease.

Vic Colezan is bodyguard to the five families as he is the best at what he does. Taking an oath 3 years earlier for the families it means he vowed to not only be loyal but to be celibate to avoid distractions along the way. So when Vic is tasked with the job of protecting Renee, the families nanny for the summer, it throws a spanner in the works because Vic has his eyes set on only one thing, Her! However life isn't that simple, Renee is betrothed to someone else even if she doesn't know it yet and Vic took that oath of Blood In No Out so distraction is not on the agenda, or is it?

I really can't get enough of these books from this author. Sometimes I feel like a seriously crazy stalker when I am continually checking when there is another book coming in this series. They are simply awesome and with this one you could feel the tension emanating from the pages. Vic and Renee were both really strong characters who will have you on the edge of your seat championing them all the way through.
The story itself has all the usual shenanigans we can expect from Rachel Van Dykens Mafia mind. Oh and did I also mention that this book is seriously hot in places ;)

Overall another awesome addition to the series that you won't be able to put down. I can't wait to see what Andrei's story has in store for us next because the snippets we got of him have me intrigued.

The Eagle Elite...how do I love thee! Let me count the ways...

This series is my unicorn. It is the happy place, the warm fuzziness I need with guns, gore, and mafia. Clearly my unicorns fight more than graze. Lol. These "unicorns" run the world. They aren't rainbow following happily lazing unicorns. No, they are the guns blazing, knife throwing, and drugging kind. My unicorns fight for love, fight for the right thing, and will do anything for family. So...

Let me count the ways...
Nixon
Chase
Tex
Phoenix (though it took a bit)
Sergio (still cry whenever I think of his journey)
Dante
Ax (must not forget him)
and now Vic.

Rachel find some way to make you feel all the feels (All the feels!!!!) In every single one of these books. Even in this novella! I'm not ashamed to say I cried. I own it because when family hurts, you hurt.

Do yourself a favor, join the family. They will always be there to pick you up! And for those of you already in "the family" what are you waiting for? Vic has something to say.

What can I say, I am a sucker for the mafia and Envy was no exception. Every time I start one of these books, I worry that characters I love will be offed, I mean we are 9+ books in at this point and I can say that I quickly learned not to trust Rachel because you never know what plot twist will lie around the corner. I was absolutely captivated by Renee and Vic dancing around each other. And what can I say other than I love the life of crime, violence, and blood these families live.

Renee was a very meek character for growing up around the mafia. So it took me a while to warm up to her as a character, but I guess I understand the meekness when she is around kids all day. I adored Vic and was falling for him immediately but that is because he is an rougher version of Nixon in my mind, and we all know Nixon is my favorite! In a surprise twist, we finally learn how Renee fit into things and it wasn't what I was expecting. While their relationship happened a little to fast for my liking, I would have liked them to get to know each other a little better, I still immensely enjoyed it.

But what I am really dying to read next is the Russians! It's time for Andrei to meet his match, seriously dying over here hoping the next book in the series is his. And don't even get me started on the Sicilians! It was an extremely quick read, filled with action from the very start, I couldn't put the book down. The story was too fast and over to soon and as always I am left waiting to see what will happen next.

Ugghh not enough......lol

I loved heading back into the mafia! it's like an addiction I just started and I can't quit, not that I want too.....I loved the conviction Vic had when it came to Renee and her safety but it was great to see the bit of human in him that was so deeply hidden behind the monster he had to be. These two were meant for each other. Their love was deep and necessary. I loved visiting the family all over again. I can't wait for the next book💖💖💖

He watches the nanny, thinks about her, lusts after her. She has no idea who she is, but of course they all do. Secrets are kept, white lies are told. Love finds its way into the darker soul of Vic. He’s bound to the family took an oath, but she’s a temptation he can’t ignore.

Envy: An Eagle Elite Novella was an addictive, sexy mafia romance!!! RVD bewitches readers to fall in love with her complicated and yet lovable heroes. And in this novella, RVD has me and fellow readers falling hard for Vic as he can’t fight his growing forbidden attraction to Renee, the nanny. So if you are looking for a whirlwind story that was addicting, full of sexual chemistry, and of course RVD’s staple of mafia romance then this is the book for you.

4.5 Stars!
Review by Lisa Kane

I love Rachel Van Dyken's Eagle Elite series. She can write the biggest, most diabolical mobsters and yet have me swoon over them just the same!

Renee is the nanny for Nixon's daughter and Phoenix's son. While she is no stranger to the life that these men lead, she longs for the day that she will be going away for school. She's 21 and wants a life separate from this one. No more guns and blood and fighting.

Vic Abandonato watches over the family. He will protect them with his life. He is an assassin. He takes out who he needs to and doesn't hesitate to do it. Time and time again.

Vic Corazon Abandonato.
In all his gory glory.
Tight black pants.
Tight black shirt.
Enough guns strapped to him to win an all-out war.
And no smile.

Renee isn't exactly immune to Vic's charms. Now Vic...he's to protect Renee, but he wants her. With every fiber of his being. But she is never to be his.

"I have enough deaths to pay for-I wold not survive having yours on my head too."
"Because you would get killed?" I croaked.
That smirk, that beautiful smirk, crept across his face again.
"No, Renee, because I wouldn't want to live-not knowing that I was allowed to and you were in the cold, hard ground."

Just like every book in this series, nothing and no one is as they appear. Renee's life is clouded with mystery and she seems to be the only one in the dark. Vic has taken vows to protect and vows that have changed his life forever. Renee is not his for the taking.

My loyalty had never been tested in such a violent or ridiculous way.

In the midst of all this suspense, Ms. Van Dyken's sense of snarky humor manages to lighten the dark side of this read.

I could see her toned thighs fucking taunting me with every step she took in my direction. I wanted to lick between them to see how many licks it would take to get to her center.

I don't think I will ever look at a Tootsie Pop the same way again.

Things are going to get ugly. Things are going to get gory. Prepare to be horrified at some parts.

The mafia didn't do things by accident. It was no accident she had been asked to watch the children.

Nixon has always been my favorite, but he barely resembles the same man he was in the first book. Even then, he knew he would ascend to great power, but along the way he has hardened to such a ruthlessness that sometimes I wonder who the hell he is-the choices he makes, the actions he takes-jeez this guy makes Don Corleone look like a lamb.

I watched in horror as Nixon dug the knife into the top of Vic's hand and started etching out the different names that he'd sworn to protect.

How can two people with such different values and morals ever be together in a world that is filled with revenge and blood lust?

I pulled back and laughed. I laughed hard because I was happy. Because she made me happy.
Because for the first time in a long time-I knew joy.

As an avid mafia romance reader, this book was right up my alley. I loved seeing Vic, the tough, self-disciplined, enforcer, mafioso made man, lose his heart and self control at the same time find the soul he thought he’s been missing.

Renee, the heroine, brought light to his darkness, folks. It was sweet how at first she was attracted to yet absolutely terrified of Vic. As they start to spend time together, she learns he’s had eyes only for her in more ways than one.

Their attraction and chemistry can’t be denied. When a big secret and dangerous deal gets revealed, their relationship is caught in the middle and both of them are left reeling from the fallout. But not to worry, my fellow mafia romance book loving friends, the devil in Vic gets unleashed and all hell breaks loose when push comes to shove.

I should warn you this book tiptoes into an area I usually try to avoid. A subcharacter, who is likely going to get his own story told, runs an illegal, underground pleasure type club that involves victimizing and trafficking women. Though as Austin Powers would say, “That just ain't my bag, baby”, it added life-threatening drama and an unexpected element. Meaning, it wasn’t just thrown in for the sake of adding it.

The writing flowed, and I stayed engaged the entire time. As the only book of this series I’ve read, I can attest it is a very steamy, stand-alone but likely linked to other subcharacters in previous books. I’m not sure how dark the others go, so I’ll have to read reviews and decide book by book if I find them as appealing as this one.
