Having never read a Jane Harvey-Berrick novel before, I went in with no expectations other than knowing I had to read Battle Scars after reading the blurb.

“Our relationship had been born from the most desperate of situations, warmed by friendship and respect, heightened by our physical attraction, and tempered with the threat of losing it all in an explosion of dust and violence.”

We often see the heartache those left behind face when a loved one is deployed, but what happens when the boot is on the other foot? When it’s the marine who loses his heart to a woman who has a successful career that also places her in life-threatening situations? Something Sergeant Jackson Connor is all too aware of after he saves the life of the New York Times’ foreign correspondent, Maggie “MJ” Buckman in Afghanistan.

description

I loved how these characters were portrayed and, rather than being overwrought with angst, it brought realism as Maggie and Jack quickly realise that their feelings for one another run deeper than either has ever experienced and what they have is worth fighting for. Yes everything happens fast, to a degree a bit too fast considering their first acquaintance, but together they have a magnetic chemistry and I appreciated how Maggie’s career was as important as Jackson’s and the fact he never questioned that, along with their reluctant acceptance that they’d be apart for long periods of time.

“I’ll never like saying goodbye to you.”

This story had so many facets which kept me glued to the pages and I felt every moment of Jack and Maggie’s joy and pain and can say with some certainty that Jane Harvey-Berrick will be an author I read again as her writing-style worked well for me. But not only has she brought her reader a wonderful, and I should say very sexy and at times humorous, love-story with strong memorable characters, she reminds her reader of what’s important and of past events we shouldn’t forget—the exact reason why we should love and hold on tight to what, and who, really matters.

“Sometimes it seems like the whole world is on fire.”

This was a really interesting story and you could tell the author had put a lot of research into fine tuning all of the details around working in a war zone.

MJ is a journalist for the New York Times and often her job can lead her into dangerous places, life threatening at times too. She is on assignment covering a story on the plight of the people in a war zone when she finds herself needing to be rescued by the marines she is in camp with.

Sergeant Jack Connor is absolutely livid when he has to put his men at risk due to the ignorance of MJ’s decision to not listen to instructions. After the anger has simmered down and they are back at base MJ goes in search of the men who saved her. She will be leaving to return home and in her parting words offers to buy them a beer if they ever find themselves in NY city.

Two month’s later Jack does just that. MJ never expecetd him to show up at her office and ends up spending a life changing weekend with him. The intensity of their connection is not something either one of them can ignore so they agree on seeing where this could potentially take them. One thing is for certain though, it will be a long distance relationship that will test them both.

Jack can be deployed at any moment for up to two years and MJ can be sent on assignment to some of the most dangerous parts of the world. Being in a relationship with a Marine is not for every woman and Jack is fully aware of that, which is why he is yet to marry or settle down with anyone. MJ is different though and worth risking his heart on.

When MJ lands the job of her dreams, taking her even further away from him, she begins to question herself, doubts about her future are setting in and it all begins with Jack. She has never been the settle down and have a family sort of girl but the idea of doing that with Jack now feels like something she would love to do. However, being a Marine comes with extreme risk and when Jack is involved in a tragedy MJ fears she is about to lose the only man she has ever loved.

Can I have an ‘awwwwwww’ because I loved this story, it’s not too lengthy but nothing felt rushed, it all played out nicely. Jack and MJ are so cute together and I loved reading something really different, it was refreshing ☺

I love this authors writing. It's not always polished, and sometimes the story doesn't flow as smoothly as one would like, but her stories are filled with real people, real emotions, and some beautiful perceptions on our brutal world. Her characters are always so rich with depth.

Sergeant Jackson (Jack) Connor is a southern gentleman, and an alpha to the core. He first meets journalist MJ (Maggie) Buckman in Afghanistan, when leading his team on an extraction mission, saving her life. He is not very kind to her, in fact he's pretty harsh in his assessment of how her actions could've cost lives. She thanks his team and mentions if any of them are ever in New York, to stop by her office because she owes them a drink. Of course, a few months later, Jack shows up at her office.

Although this is a romance, this story had a deeper delve into brutalities of war, specifically on refugees. Jane Harvey-Berrick has some beautiful and sometimes harsh insights, she simply gets it.
"Freedom has a taste that the protected will never know," she said, whispering the well-known words.

"And I, one of the protected thank you deeply and sincerely," I replied.
I love how she incorporated Sebastian and Caro into this story and it made me pick up The Education of Sebastian & The Education of Caroline right after finishing this book.

My only complaint is Jack's southern drawl. The author uses the word "waal" for "well" and jarred me out of the flow of the story every time.

‘They’ve left behind their families, their community leaders, everything they’ve known, and all they carry with them is their fear and anger.’

There is absolutely no question that Jane Harvey-Berrick writes the most detailed and researched military romances; we never question that this Author knows exactly what she’s writing about. There is also no question that this type romance is very close to her heart and that she puts her soul into her writing it. Battle Scars is an in-depth and topical snapshot at the world we live in today and whilst there’s a beautiful romance running through it, it certainly has a strong message and pulls at the heart-strings as well.

‘Where did such hatred come from?’

We found Maggie and Jackson to be two very mature no-nonsense characters. There was no unnecessary drama and we fully believed every moment we spent with them. They were each beautiful in their own way, their lives, struggles and love believable. We slowly fell in love with them as the story progressed and found Maggie to be one of the strongest female heroines we’ve come across in a while.

‘I knew. I’d met the love of my life. And I wasn’t letting him go.’

We have to say that the writing was stellar in Battle Scars; we felt the dry heat and sand in the back of our throats, we smelt the aftermath of fire and we felt the desperation and fear. What began as an instant attraction became a deep searing love story continuously tested by the battles, wars and circumstances people face today.

“I don’t know what this is, Maggie, what’s happening here, but it feels good. And I don’t want it to stop.”

This is a story of friendships, loyalty, respect, hope and love. It’s a story of finding the one person who makes you want to fight for, no matter the cost. It’s a story of sacrifice and compromise. It’s a story of life and the world we currently live in.

Loved

I've been totally living in this story about a marine and a journalist. The Education of Sebastian and its sequel, The Education of Caroline, also by this author are among my top favourite stories ever, so it was a real treat to return to that, even though the story was totally new. I especially enjoyed the cameo of Seb and Caroline in this.

As well as the belly warming romance, I loved the social commentary in this as we see the world and its conflicts through Maggie's journalist's eyes, determined to tell the complex stories as accurately and as dispassionately as she can. It really set this apart from your usual soldier smut.

Highly recommended. Complete story.

The moment you enable downloads and receive new books on your kindle … those are the moments to look forward to – especially when unexpectedly books from one of your favorite authors appear.

I received Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick to read / review and I fell in love with the cover first.
While I am still not sure if the title really fits the content I truly believe that the Cover could not have been better …. Hmmm yeah maybe if BT Urruela had been the one ON the Cover and handing me the book with a signature and a quote of Jane inside - #laughing

Now seriously … I fell in love with the writing of this author when I read Dangerous to Know & Love and that book will forever be my No. 1 – because lets be honest – you never forget your first love. But I think Battle Scars is my new No. 2 …

This book has so much to offer.
For one there are two seriously strong characters and while that should be a struggle for an author to bring those two together … it seems so effortlessly done here. Everything makes sense. There is not one person giving and the other taking. The Balance in the story was unbelievable .

I loved the PoV “Sarge” had – I think it was the first time ever that I heard a “Book-Marine” comment on the understanding of the life of a person related to a Soldier.

MJ was devoted to the thought of making a difference and trying this the best way she could think of made her developing relationship more real. Also her struggle to see if she really COULD make a difference or if she was doing more harm than good felt real.

Then there was this political roundtrip – I really had to take some deep breaths at some points – because a friend of mine was close to one event and could have easily ended up as collateral damage. In addition, that brings it home to every one of us ….There is NO place on earth where you are truly save anymore …

My heart stopped for a second when Sarge “slipped” – but I know that this was intentional so HELL yes it worked …

Also dear fellow lovers of this author you can give a wave to some old well known character that has his moment here … (not going to say who)

With all these strong emotions going on – let’s not forget one – the humor … I loved the banter between Sarge and MJ … amongst all the reality in this book and the romance there was still a little space for humor and witty dialogues …

Yes this book touches about all of the known subjects that go wrong in the world which makes it an emotional battlefield already – than it adds love, loss, humor , honor and two strong characters … So I leave you to guess how this will play out.

If you’re looking for an easy read military romance that literally transports you into the very poignant world of Maggie and Jackson and a wonderfully well written romance, then Battle Scars should definitely be added to your reading list.

“It’s okay, Maggie,” he whispered as my shoulders shook. “You’re home now.”

Battle Scars is a relatively light and easy read, while still dealing with some very real, and at times heartbreaking, realities.

MJ Buckman and Jackson Connor couldn't have gotten off to a rougher, tougher, start if they had tried. While in Afghanistan working on an article for the New York Times, MJ comes under fire and has to be rescued by the Marine Corps unit she is "stationed" with, led by Jackson. Not appreciating having to put his men's lives in danger to save a reporter, let's just say things between them weren't all glitter and unicorns during the rest of MJ's stay.
But what started out as a prickly, antagonistic relationship soons morphs into a lovely and very heartfelt connection, one that takes them both by surprise. As Jackson and MJ navigate the ups and downs of life as a long-distance couple, you can feel the love as it blossoms and share in their hopes and fears that what they have could really be "it". They're both very strong, independent people who are realizing maybe it's not so bad to depend on someone else for a change.

Jane Harvey-Berrick does a wonderful job in portraying the harsh realities of life in the military, as well as those of a civilian such as MJ, working as a journalist covering some of the toughest stories imaginable. She paints such an incredibly vivid picture throughout this entire book, I felt like I was right there with characters, from the desert of Aghanistan, to the snow in NYC, and the oppresive heat of Egypt.
I really appreciate the thoughtful and caring attention to detail she puts into all of her books, but I feel she gives special attention to her military stories and that's what makes them so real.

This is the first book I've read by Jane Harvey-Berrick and I enjoyed it. It's a sweet story of finding an unexpected connection amidst the chaos of war.

Jackson or 'Sarge' is a great character. He's strong, loyal, protective and honourable but he's tortured. He's quite a closed book but the glimpses we get when he opens up are touching. MJ is a strong, ambitious woman who knows what she wants and aims high. When her best intentions bring her face to face with a peeved Sergeant, her hackles rise and she stands her ground.

I found the changes from writing in the first person to third person (and back) between chapters unsettling. For me it disrupted the flow somewhat and detracted from the story. However, I did enjoy this book and would certainly consider other books by this author.

It's a touching story set against the uncertainty and turmoil of the world today. Give it a go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

An amazing depiction of the world we live in -- with a reality check via a hard and strong message. The romance is beautifully portrayed -- while still maintaining the contrasts and conflicts. Two very strong main characters and a terrific secondary cast. The opposites attract vibe is a winning addition for the strong Marine and the NYT journalist.

A riveting military story that is fast-paced and intense. It brings with it authenticity and rawness that makes for a dynamic read.

Beautifully intense and oh-so-functional military romance

This is a surprising book with a natural, intense and functional love story, and some hard-hitting elements thrown in to make it a raw and real read. A well-written and emotional military story, this is a quick read that leaves an impact, and I really enjoyed it.

MJ Buckman is a journalist who visits the most dangerous places in the world in order to bring real-life stories to the people at home. Her latest story sees her in Afghanistan, and when she runs into trouble, a team of Marines are there to save her life.

Marine Sergeant Jackson Connor is the one to drag MJ out of trouble. He’s annoyed yet intrigued by the spunky reporter, and is unable to forget about her, so he looks her up the next time he is home.

What follows is an unlikely love story as two complete opposites come together, sharing a strong attraction and a life-changing connection. There’s just that special ‘something’ that draws them together. And despite everything that stands in their way – their lives, their dreams, pretty much the whole world – they make the brave leap to follow their hearts.

“It’s a new day,” he murmured against my flushed skin. “Let’s just see where it takes us.”

This is a functional, real, passionate and intense relationship. MJ and Jack are completely open with each other, holding nothing back, and I loved watching them work to build something together even with all of the hurdles standing in their way.

“We’ll make it work,” he said, a mixture of confidence and despair etched on his face. “If we both want it, we’ll make it work.”

Through danger, violence and fear, they stand by each other’s sides, and it was gorgeous to see. But compromise will only get them so far. How will they manage when their dreams continually pull them in opposite directions, literally dragging them apart?

I’d do whatever it took to hold onto her. Even if that meant letting her go.

I really enjoyed this book. I’m a fan of this author, and didn’t know much about this story when I started reading, but I trusted her completely – plus I’m a sucker for a military romance. But this one still took me by surprise. The romance was gorgeous – sweet, passionate, swoony and functional - and though there was drama, it was real-life with nothing stupid or annoying about it. And there was so much attention paid to the detail of their lives, Harvey-Berrick certainly did her research with this one, and I thought those added elements gave this book a feeling of realism that you don’t often get in romance.

But the focus of the book is most definitely the love story, and I thought it was really gorgeous. I loved the characters, I loved them together, and I loved their story.

“I’ve waited too long to find you. I’m not letting you go now.”

3.5-4 stars

And as a special bonus - fans of this author will love the cameo from Sebastian and Caroline (squee!)

I fell completely and irrevocably in love with Jane's fantastic writing since reading The Education of Sebastian/The Education of Caroline. I knew then that I've discovered a new unicorn author for me. She is versatile and always comes up with new refreshing and unique ideas. What I particularly love about her books is that her stories are realistic and accurate due to the extensive research she does before writing a story. Her characters feel real to me - they are authentic and I can easily connect with them on an emotional level. Jane's stories make me feel, think and reflect. They are a source of wisdom.

Battle Scars was another winner for me. It was a beautiful, poignant and thought-provoking military romance about two young people - a Marine Sergeant and a New York Times journalist - who meet under quite unusual circumstances and try to build a future together as a couple while struggling with long distances and occupational hazards. It had everything I'm looking for in a great and compelling book - strong and likeable characters, interesting storyline, hot sex and heart-melting romance. I've devoured this gem and enjoyed every single minute of it.

"Our relationship had been born from the most desperate of situations, warmed by friendship and respect, heightened by our physical attraction, and tempered with the threat of losing it all in an explosion of dust and violence."

MJ Buckman is saved by Jack Conner and his men in Afghanistan from being stoned by an angry mob of locals. The sexy Sergeant gives her a lecture about risking her and other peoples' lives and being too naive and ill-prepared. MJ is shocked by his brusque behaviour but doesn't leave out the opportunity to explain her motives to him and why her work as a journalist is so important to her. A few months later they meet in New York and go out on a date where they hit it off immediately. Although they couldn't be more different they still feel a strange pull towards each other. Their sexual chemistry is undeniable and they decide to have fun and see where it all goes until they find out that they feel much more for each other then they are ready to admit. But is a relationship possible between a career-driven woman and a man whose only purpose in life is serving his country?

I've adored Jack and Maggie. They're both such intriguing characters. Jackson is a true Alpha - a tough, courageous Marine with a soft and romantic side that he only shows to MJ. She is a very smart and capable woman who is commited to her job and therefore understands Jack very well. She makes him open up and share his thoughts and feelings. They're a well-matched and endearing couple.

I recommend this wonderful book from the bottom of my heart. Jane Harvey-Berrick is going to put you under her spell with her words and you will find yourself immersed into this captivating story. I give it 5 well deserved Battle stars.

I have been reading for a long time and I always look forward to finding new authors; I have found an author that I plan to read more of with Ms. Harvey-Berrick.

Now that I am older, I like to read books where the characters are around my age and I can relate to them. In Battle Scars, I could relate to Jackson, my husband is retired Air Force, so I understand the feelings and concerns that both Jack and MJ have with deployments.

I highly recommend this book and the author.

”The invisible injuries are the ones that are hardest to heal.”

I have a weakness for military romances, maybe it’s the military wife in me, but they are my KRYPTONITE. My ache. My addiction. My all.

A military romance threaded with an in-depth dive into a war zone, Battle Scars bares itself intimately with intrinsic detail and unparalleled devotion felt every step of the way. Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick is UNIQUE—UNFLINCHING—as it tackles serious subjects along with everlasting love. I was FULLY IMMERSED into this war-torn tale of love, loss, and life.

We need to keep fighting for what is right because otherwise we let the darkness win.

A hardcore Marine and a determined reporter collide on the battlefield at the brink of disaster, a unlikely union forming between this hero and heroine who have given up on love.

Jackson ‘Jack’ Connor is gorgeous, tough, tender, and one complex alpha of a military hero. He has survived hell and is a warrior, a hero in every way. I LOVED Jack’s perfect fusion of strong, sexy, and sweet.

MJ Buckman is a tough-as-nails reporter. She is as beautiful as she is bold, a rare reporter in today’s world of morals and seeker of truth and justice. I ADMIRED her courage and compassion.

Being close to death, I knew I wanted to live. I wanted to experience it all.

Neither Jack nor MJ are looking for a relationship, but after their war zone collision, neither can fight the combustible connection constantly chasing them.

Jackson Connor would be a dangerous man to love—and my heart was right in the firing line.

I LOVED this sweet and strong Marine hero along with the heroine, a bold and beautiful reporter.

It felt like she’s been created for me.

This journey is as EDUCATIONAL as it is EMOTIONAL. Battle Scars paints a vivid picture of war, tragedy, and love from the aftermath. I forged a deep connection that would have been even been more powerful if the hero’s viewpoint had been written in first-person to match the heroine’s. This in-depth tale is so UTTERLY RAW that it FELT REAL, and I REVELED in its POWER.

Battle Scars is not just a story read but AN EXPERIENCE LIVED and ENDURED. From my military wife status to my recent time living in refugee-inhabited Germany, Battle Scars is a military romance I well understood and WHOLEHEARTEDLY FELT. I felt every emotion that the hero and heroine felt; their love story was mine. Battle Scars is as tender as it is tough, a THOUGHT-PROVOKING TALE that leaves a mark on the heart and an impact everywhere.

I’d do whatever it took to hold on to her. Even if that meant letting her go.

I love all kinds of romantic stories; dramatic, dark, over-the-top, you name it. But every once in a while, I want a ‘normal’ story without any extras… Just a realistic story about two people falling in love and trying to make it work. That’s what Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick is for me. I love the story of MJ and Jackson.
“You’re calling this an encounter?” “A date implies that there’ll be kissing involved.” “Kissing?” “It’s in the small print.” “I guess I must have missed that memo.” “Your loss.” “I’m a fast learner.”

MJ and Jackson are both driven people who live for their work. MJ works as a journalist in the more dangerous parts of this world, exposing the stories behind the news. Jackson is a Marine who has seen the horrors of war, but who’s still a dedicated soldier to the bone. MJ and Jackson have lived lives, have seen the worst, and recognize something special when it comes along. But building something beautiful when your work means that much to you can be a challenge.
“When I held her in my arms, she made me think of summer afternoons in Mama’s garden—her warm skin, the sultry heat in her eyes, those sexy lips made for long, languid kisses. I’d do whatever it took to hold onto her.”

Battle Scars is written in a double POV, but most of the time we’re inside the head of MJ. Through her eyes we the story unfolding, with some chapters from Jackson’s POV. The story is not as dramatic or painful as other books I’ve read by this author, but it’s still very much her author voice. Jackson and MJ act like grownup people who make grownup, realistic decisions.

MJ and Jackson are a great couple who bring out the best in each other, I love their realness. While the couple makes thoughtful decisions (and have hot sex), both their jobs make sure their lives aren’t boring at all. I love that Jackson is into MJ from the moment he meets her, and that it’s MJ who has to change her view on relationships after meeting Jackson. In most book it’s the other way around. I also like the realness of the situations the characters find themselves in. So is MJ in my little country, and what she finds is a very real situation that I read about in my newspapers on a daily base.
“Your life, my life. I want to be with you. Forever. No more goodbyes. We’ve said those words too many times. I don’t want it anymore.”

I love Battle Scars, I give the story of MJ and Jackson 5 stars.

MJ, a journalist for the New York Times finds herself in a terrifying situation during an interview and is saved by a group of Marines, led by Sergeant Jackson Connor.

Yummmm

Once back in the safety of the military base, MJ gets an earful from a very pissed off Jackson and not being a shrinking violet, MJ gives just as big of an earful right back to him. Flash forward a few months later and Jackson seeks her out at her offices in New York. Neither one is looking for a relationship, just simple companionship for the time he is in town...simple yes?

Their time together is intense and hot but is unfortunately cut short because MJ has to go back to the Middle East for an assignment. They can't stop thinking about each other and they try the long (I mean really freaking long) distance relationship. Without ruining the rest, I'll just say intense situations, a few insights that made me think a bit, a hot Marine and an intelligent career driven heroine. I loved it!

I read a few other reviews and some thought this is too insta-love. Believe me, I am the first to point out not feeling a connection between characters but not here. I'm thinking more along the lines of shared intense situations share intense feelings. You learn a lot about someone quickly

I have to admit, I was on a JHB reading marathon. I didn't realize how many of her books I had in my TBR. I "save" books and read them when I know something annoying is coming up in my life or after reading a less than stellar book. I'm glad I saved this.

As a HUGE fan of the Education of Sebastian and the Education of Caroline, I was thrilled when I discovered that Jane Harvey-Berrick was writing another military book and I had no doubt that it would meet if not exceed my expectations. As soon as I saw Battle Scars appear on my kindle, I dove right in needing to reading the story of MJ and Jackson.

I absolutely LOVED that this book was an older woman younger man romance that began in a most unlikely of places and continued despite the tremendous obstacles that were placed in its path. The determination of MJ or Maggie as Jackson called her, to make her dream of being a foreign correspondent become a reality was inspiring, especially since she was willing to give up love to make it happen.

It was a perfectly pleasant surprise to have some of my favorite characters appear in their story, Caroline, Sebastian, and Marc just to name a few; seeing where they now were in their lives once the pages of their story were long since finished.

The story of Maggie and Jackson is not only of finding love, but it was so much more; giving the reader another glimpse into the affects of war, on a person, a soldier, a nation and a relationship. I was brought to tears more than once, not because the story was sad but because it was moving to me.

I can't wait for more from this amazing author (and I cannot wait to meet her in a few weeks at the Big Apple Author Signing!!)

It was kinda boring... like... too perfect boring, you know what I mean?

I liked the MCs chemistry but that was it. I expected a different kind of angst and definitely more romance. Something like the second part of Sebastian and Caro's story.

I absolutely love a military romance, but what sold me on this one is part of the blurb:

”A grown-up love story about two people who aren’t looking for love, but realize how precious it is when they find it. They don’t play games and there are no stupid misunderstandings, just life standing in their way.”

You know, sometimes I just want a plain old great story with no unnecessary or overly manufactured angst. And, Jane Harvey-Berrick certainly delivered with this one.

This was full of all the things I love about reading – romance, heart pounding excitement, and enough sweetness to make it just right. This was bursting with the love between MJ and Jack, I could almost feel it. Their story is sweet and romantic but also heartbreaking and wrought with tough decisions.

Battle Scars is a story of discovering love and figuring out if it’s worth keeping and better yet…..how to keep it. A wonderful and truly satisfying read.

An advanced reader copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

I'm still smiling after reading this gem.

Jack had just jumped on the list as one of my favourite book boy friends. Just under Sebastian 😘
Heartwarming read about love between a Sergent in the Marines and a Battlefield reporter, who meet under scary war time circumstances.

Loved every minute of it.

Ms. Harvey-Berrick has become one of my favourite, auto-buy authors. She has written some emotional books that have choked me up to the point of tears running down my face. This is not one of them. That’s not to say it isn’t a good book, just one that it didn’t draw me in like many others to the point I feel like I’m there right beside the characters. In this story it felt more like I was an observer from a distance. And because I know and I’ve experienced what she can make me feel, for me, this one suffers for not drawing me in.

I do find it interesting, I love the character of MJ. She is brave and honest and a truly honorable reporter. I enjoyed reading about her journeys and adventures. I found her so noble when she thanked all the marines for saving her life. She didn’t just take them for granted.

Jackson is a most excellent character too. He’s a career Marine, or at least plans to be a Marine for a while. He’s brave and savvy and all that is good in a hero.

I enjoyed their relationship, what little time they had to spend together, considering they were often on two different continents.

I have this theory that there are two main kinds of readers: emotional readers and technical readers and various combinations of each. If I were a technical type reader, I know I would appreciate this book a lot more. And after writing this review, I see it has received some high grades. But I’m much more of an emotional reader and this particular book just didn’t stir up my emotions that much. So it’s a good book, but just not one for me, not like some of her other books that do appeal to the emotional reader in me.

Life is too short - must read!

Jane Harvey Berrick comes through and gives us a beautiful love story based on the realities of life between living in the military and life as a civilian. The book introduces us to a very tumultuous and complex scenario - it’s literally an “on the edge of your seat” book of excitement. Knowing that anything can happen at anytime makes this story all the more intriguing and addicting to read. When a story is that involved, there is absolutely no way that you can put the book down.

“I love to walk on the beach in the rain.” I couldn’t help the sigh that fell from my lips. “I know it sounds weird,” he said defensively, “but the sea goes slate gray, and it’s wild and rough, and I’m usually the only person there. It’s . . . cleansing, peaceful.”

The two main characters aren’t just your average military man meets girl - nope, no way. Jane Harvey Berrick wouldn’t do that because Jane Harvey Berrick is always thinking outside the box, always! Her novels floor me, they have left me with my jaw open in awe countless times and this book is no different from the rest. I adore this book for so many reasons. There are so many things we don’t know about that is going on behind the scenes and Berrick incorporates this in her story line. She gives you an exquisite love story that reaches inside you very deeply because it hits home - literally.

Maggie and Jackson have such an extraordinary love, a love that you will find to be unlike many that you read from many books. Their love is magical and unconditional - it has to be in order to survive all that it does. This book is just such an amazing story that I wish I could just go on and on about it but then I would just spoil it for all.

But even as her tongue presses into my mouth, starting a wicked conversation that burns right through every molecule of my body, part of me is thinking, God, I love you, Maggie. So much. But I don’t say the words out loud.”

Always trust in Jane Harvey Berrick - I have for years and she’s yet to let me down. I hold her in very high regard.

....and she might’ve added a little surprise in this book that may have some from maybe a prior book!

“Freedom has a taste that the protected will never know,” she said, whispering the well-known words. “And I, one of the protected thank you deeply and sincerely,” I replied.”

MJ Buckman is a journalist, who is in Afghanistan trying to help the girls who don't have the rights for learning, when she meets a grumpy Marine Sergeant, Jackson Connor, who has to save her from being stoned to death. And when they get to safety, he's still super mean to her, even though her intentions are to help the young girls of the country. Back in New York, Jackson hunts her down to take her up on buying him a drink, and they embark on a journey of love. And I'll just repost this line....."Assignment Vs. Deployment?!" Battle Scars was a story that I was instantly catapulted into instantly, and I didn't look back until the very last page. The very talented Jane Harvey-Berrick wrote an exciting story with enough action, suspense of working in a war zone, along with push & pull that kept me on the edge of my seat, with a side of romance. I fell in love with MJ, and the grumpy Jackson instantly, so I was rooting for them the whole time. Their sparks lit up the screen which ignited into some hot sexy times. And add in a twist that I never saw coming that had me dropping loud f-bombs, and in my opinion, this was the perfect story. I love this author, and will be waiting impatiently for her next addicting story, so HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

As a huge fan of Jane Harvey-Berrick and her fabulous writing, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. This amazingly talented and often underrated author writes stories that get under your skin. Her writing is vivid, her characters loveable and the lessons her books contain will stay with you long after you've finished them. Battle Scars was no exception to that. It was an unputdownable and very thought-provoking book that touched many current subjects like the war in the middle East and the aftermaths of that. But most of all it was the story of two people that were driven by the same purpose: peace and justice.

One of them is Maggie "MJ" Buckman, a journalist from the New York Times who is tirelessly reporting from the international hot spots, always looking for the truth and trying to bring attention to the horrible things that are happening in the world. And the other one is Marine Sergeant Jackson "Jack" Connor - a hot, tough and dutiful soldier, currently stationed in Afghanistan. This is where these two complete opposites that I loved dearly meet for the first time.

Jack saves Maggie's life after an interview turns wrong, resulting in an angry mob trying to kill her. He is not amused about her recklessness and is very vocal about it. But the head-strong female reporter is not threatend to give this sexy Southern charmer a piece of her mind in return which absolutely fascinates him. Jackson knows that relationships don’t work for men in the military. He’s a living proof of that. But when MJ crosses his path, he’s curious and all kinds of in-lust with this beautiful city girl. Maggie never expected to find the right guy in somebody like Jack. But it turns out that opposites attract! Things get really hot between them and they soon find themselves caring for each other deeply. But the problem is that they’re always traveling in different directions which makes a relationship between them difficult. Is it possible for them to compromise and find a way to be together despite their career choices?

In order to find out you need to read this amazing book! I strongly recommend you to pick it up or you will miss out on a wonderful story about two people who aren’t looking for love, but realize how precious it is when they finally find it. It's refreshing how Maggie and Jack get each other and don’t play games. They support each other's choices no matter how hard it is because they respect and love each other. Their only problem is life standing in their way. Love often demands sacrifices and so they will need to choose. But sometimes the toughest decisions lead to the biggest rewards. I'm giving this gem of a book 5 well deserved stars. Great job dear Jane!

Battle scars is a story of finding love from the most unexpected situations and places.

"Amidst death, I had found life"

In an Afghan village Maggie finds herself in a dangerous situation when the family's home she has visited to interview for the New York Times comes under fire.

Jackson is one of the soldiers who risks his life to save her and after reeling her a new one for being stupid and endangering herself and his soldier's he accepts her thanks and the invitation of a drink if he is ever in her area.

Maggie or MJ is a career driven woman as a reporter with no other commitments and goes wherever her work takes her.

Seargeant Jackson Connor aka Jack is married to the Marines.

Jackson surprises Maggie by taking her up on her offer and while on leave Jack visits her office.

Both of them hit it off immediately, Maggie has an understanding of Jack's career and has seen through her job what he has dealt with and Jack understands why Maggie feels she has to be the voice of the people who are suffering through war and other situations but obviously neither like that the other is constantly endangering themselves but it's part of the job.

Battle scars is a great read that deals with real life situations and decisions.

There's no heavy angst or drama and I found Jane's writing flowed with ease and easy to get into right from the beginning.

An interesting plot with research evident to deliver such a good military based romance.

As Maggie and Jackson grow closer and distance growing wider through work Jackson and Maggie try there best to make it work.

A heartwarming love story that involves sacrifices.

"Our relationship has been born from the most desperate of situations, warmed by friendship and respect, heightened by our physical attraction and tempered with the threat of losing it all in an explosion of dust and violence."

Told in first person dual pov and leads to a hea.

Enjoyable read.

Yikes the writing was terribleeeee. I've read books by this author before and don't remember them being this bad?!

It was written as if the author has never had a conversation with another human in her life and only knew by what she saw on badly written sit coms.... if that makes sense. Just super chunky and run on sentences on top of no chemistry between the characters.
