When Evalina is imprisoned for witchcraft, will her supernatural bond with animals be her curse or salvation?

In 1854, Evalina Stowe witnesses the murder of her brother by Dr. Dowdrick, an enraged client at the tailor’s where they work. Desperate to stop him, she rouses a swarm of wasps that sting the doctor while she stabs him with scissors, and then flees. At a subsequent job when birds race to her defense, Evalina is declared a witch and sent to Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary.

While imprisoned, Evalina is horrified not only to learn that Dr. Dowdrick is still alive, but he’s experimenting on inmates. Determined to get inside his Eclectic Medical School, to expose his nefarious activities, she’s passionate about protecting fellow prisoners, especially Lewin, a child thief who knew her brother, and Birdy, a kind, resilient Welsh man serving time for a worker’s death while blasting granite for the railroad.

Evalina, her friends and her “wild beasts” work against time to unmask Dowdrick’s crimes when she participates with him in a symposium, showcasing Philadelphia’s premium doctors. If they fail, not only will the doctor’s evil deeds continue unchecked but Evalina and her crew will surely be hung. Actual historical figures such as Dr. Thomas Mutter and Charles Dickens spice up this thriller, brimming with historical gems. A second place winner in RWA’s 2019 Valley Forge Sheila Contest.

Another geeky record from fast reader cow: yes, it took only two and half hours to devour this outstandingly exciting and intriguing story!

Evil doctor who works on scientific experiments on prisoners and one of them is a witch who can conjure the killer animals with a quick snap of her fingers!

And this exciting story is taking place the historical Eastern State Penitentiary, once the most famous and expensive prison in the world located in Philadelphia. As the homepage of the prison we’re informed that its vaulted, sky-lift cells once held America’s most notorious lawbreakers including “Slick Willie” Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone.

Evalina is imprisoned for witchcraft. As I told before she has unique ability to connect with animals and use them as her secret weapon to avenge her death brother. Once upon a time she was making clothes and working with her beloved brother who has killed by impatient customer also a doctor with psychopathic tendencies.

Evalina finds out she may rouse a swarm of wasps which sting the evil doctor and then she stabs him and runs away. She thinks nobody will believe in her story but eventually she gets caught and she gets shocked to see the same evil doctor is very alive and working at the same prison she’s kept.

Evalina should act patient and make a smart plan to defeat her enemy so she acts like she wants to help him for his nefarious experiments as she plans her brutal revenge.

It’s fast, gripping, breathtaking, riveting historical/ paranormal thriller which is highly recommended to the genre fans.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Konjur Press/ Victoria Editing for sharing this moving ARC with me in exchange my honest opinions.

Witch Of The Wild Beasts
By: Catherine Stine

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
A girl who commands wild beasts must be like Snow White, right? Nope. Evalina is much more than a Disney princess. One day, Evalina watches her brother die at the hands of an evil man. When she tried to save her brother, Evalina somehow summoned bees to sting the man, and she stabbed him with scissors. Assuming he is dead, Evalina goes on the run, alone with nowhere to go. Then, an incident causes her to summon birds, and she is arrested and sent to prison. Evalina soon realizes the evil man is not dead after all, and she knows that she must stop him for herself and the other inmates. Evalina will use the wild beasts she can summon in her quest.
Witch Of The Wild Beasts is a truly unique story. The time period was one of great injustices. This comes across clearly in story. The poor were squashed by the rich. The evil man, for example, is a murderer. Because he's a doctor, this guy is respected and free. Wealth and position were everything and never questioned. Then there's Evalina-poor, homeless, ragged-so, she must be a criminal and sent to prison. Evalina is a good person dealt a terrible hand in life. Nothing is easy, but she never gives up. Evalina's persistence is inspiring, and it further endears her to the reader. I cared what happened to Evalina and her friends. The secondary characters were excellent, too. The atmosphere felt authentic and was accurate in my opinion. This story is an amazing experience with unforgettable characters, and I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book and the careful approach to magic that the author took. In so many books that have magic, it's often handwavium, making things appear/disappear out of thin air, etc, ignoring the laws of nature.

Here, the author presents a realistic way in which magic can exist in this world (albeit in the 1850's, which the book is set in) The protagonist can't just snap her fingers and animals do whatever she wants. It's more of a working relationship with give and take.

I certainly am glad that I don't live in this time as the prison setting sounds pretty awful (despite being 'humane' for its time) and I appreciated the appearance of a certain historical figure in the book. The ending is solid, but there is the potential for more stories, and I absolutely would love to see more on the adventures of this Witch of the Wild Beasts. Her gift certainly could lead to more adventures, and perhaps meeting another character with a different gift, who knows?

Overall a solid and well-researched story with magic presented in a realistic way. 4.25/5 stars.

“They were my heart. My soul. Though they uttered no English, they spoke my language. They never called me Evalina Stowe, my given name, or Eva, my nickname, but most importantly they never called me murderess.”

To murder a man was no small thing but to wrap your hands around a child's neck and squeeze until there was no more breath in his body, that was something different altogether. Evalina Stowe had done everything she could to free her young brother from Dr Horace Dowdrick's evil hold. She had summoned the wasps to sting his face, but still, Dowdrick refused to let go. In desperation, Evalina had stabbed the doctor with a pair of dressmaking scissors. But it was too late. Her brother was dead.

Evalina did not know what to do — she had killed a respectable man. Who would believe that it was in defence of her brother? So, she did the only thing she could do — she fled. However, living as a fugitive was no easy life. It was only a matter of time before she was caught and sent to Cherry Hill Prison. But at least Dowdrick was dead. It was a small comfort.

Kept in solitary confinement at Cherry Hill Prison, Evalina's only comfort was her small wild beasts who squeezed through cracks and crevices to comfort and console her. However, it was not long after her incarceration that Evalina discovered a terrible truth. The man she thought she had killed was not dead. He was here, looking for more victims to use as test subjects for his medical experiments. It was inevitable that Dowdrick would, at some point, call for Evalina. Evalina must gather her courage and her wild beasts if she is to have any chance of defeating him...

From a gruesome murder to a clever plot that exposes a man for what he truly is, Witch of the Wild Beasts by Catherine Stine is the utterly enthralling story of one young woman's fight for justice.

Told with an impressive narrative that captured my attention from the opening paragraph, Witch of the Wild Beasts has an awful lot to recommend it. Stine has penned a story that is both lush, lyrical and next to impossible to put down. I was captivated by this story. I loved every sentence, every word, every syllable. In all ways, it is a Historical Fantasy success.

With a cast of highly appealing characters and a setting that is rich, vibrant and crystalline in the telling, this is the kind of book that gets readers of quality Historical Fantasy very excited about. I adored the characterisation of Evalina Stowe. Evalina suffers greatly in this book. With the murder of her brother, Evalina is all alone in the world — there is no one she can turn to for help. And, unfortunately, being able to communicate with animals is both a blessing and a curse. Although Evalina can bribe the animals and make friends with them, their actions are not controlled by her and many times she finds herself in trouble because of the animals' desperate desire to protect her. They feed on Evalina's emotions. When she is happy, they are calm. When she is fearful, they become protective. I thought Stine's depiction of Evalina was dazzling. This is a heroine whom a reader can really get behind. Evalina is an especially strong young woman who, despite all the suffering, does not become bitter and cynical. Her desire to see justice done is at the forefront of her mind, but she also cares deeply for the friends she makes in prison. She realises that many of the people incarcerated with her should not be in prison. They are good people despite what the authorities might say. Evalina becomes somewhat of a crusader, desperate to make a difference, and if possible, achieve the freedom that her friends deserve. Evalina's sense of right and wrong, her pureness of heart made for a compelling read. There is also a simmering romance throughout this book between Evalina and another inmate which was very sweet.

Bertram "Birdy" Castell was a character that I simply adored. He is a very tender-hearted man who, like many inmates of Cherry Hill Prison, should not be in jail. Yet, with quiet dignity, he is resolved to his sentence, that was until he met Evalina. Although this story is told from Evalina's perspective, we come to know Birdy rather well. Birdy was a character that I enjoyed reading about. His gentle calmness and his tender ways made him a character that was very easy to like.

The antagonist of this tale is Dr Horace Dowdrick. Dowdrick is a man who is corrupted by his desire for recognition and success within the medical profession, and he will do anything to receive the accolade that he thinks he deserves. He is also a ruthless man who is quick to anger. He murdered Evalina's young brother on a whim because the child innocently did something that upset him. He is renowned in the more impoverished community for his violence, and yet he is a respectable man who is trusted and free to go about his business. The social injustice of the time is cleverly weaved into the story, which I thought was very well done. Stine has given her readers a very dark and dangerous antagonist to pit against a young and refreshing heroine.

If you enjoy wonderful escapism fiction, then check out Witch of the Wild Beasts by Catherine Stine. You won't be disappointed. I loved every minute of it.

I Highly Recommend.

As soon as I read that this book was set at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania I knew I just had to read it. When it was built Eastern State Penn was the most espensive and modern prison in the world and once housed Al Capone. It now sits unused but they conduct tours of the site and I greatly enjoyed visiting it years ago with my husband. It's creepy and spooky to walk the grounds and to look into the cells. I highly recommend checking it out one day if you are ever that way.

Evaline Stowe works with her brother making clothes for their clients. One fateful day a disgruntled client, a local doctor, becomes enraged at having to wait for his order and kills her brother. She attacks the doctor in revenge and finds out she has the power to command creatures - bees help her take down the doctor and she runs away, knowing she will be accused of his murder. While on the run she has to use her powers again to save herself, but this time she is caught and sent to Eastern State Penitentiary. It's there that she sees the doctor again, the one that killed her brother is still alive and is now conducting experiments on the prisoners. Using her smarts and her powers she convinces him that she will help him if he stops what he's doing, but he underestimates her and she works to get her revenge.

I thoroughly enjoyed Witch of the Wild Beasts! Evalina was a great protagonist and the secondary cast of characters were fantastic. The writing was smooth and easy to follow and I will definitely be picking up Stine's previous books. Highly recommended!

Witch of the Wild Beasts is a very well-written, and engaging story about a young woman named Evelina Stowe. Perhaps an unsuspecting girl on the surface, Evelina is cohorts with animals, insects, and critters. Not only that, but she also has the ability to will them to act on her emotions. After trying to stop a terrible man from murdering her brother one day at work, her life drastically changed in an instant. Evelina stabbed the man in order to save her brother, but both succumbed to their injuries. It was in this moment that she discovered her true influence over creatures of the wild, as swarms of wasps also came to her aid, attacking the assailant and sacrificing themselves for the sake of her purpose.

Forced to live on the streets in hiding, Evelina fears that her special kinship with animals will get her in trouble. Eventually, it does. Able to secure another second job as a bird girl at a farm, Evelina quickly befriends the pests and invites the birds into her home, making roosts for them and stealing corn for feeding. When the farm owner discovers her masquerade, her favorite bird lodges itself in the man's throat and kills him, thus condemning Evelina as a witch.

Two men now murdered by the extension of her hands, Evelina finds herself in the notorious Eastern State Penitentiary, charged for witchcraft. In 1854, such a charge would not be taken lightly. During her stay, she discovers a devious secret: the terrible doctor she "murdered" in an attempt to save her brother was alive and well, and doing something to the penitentiary's inmates. Working alongside fellow prisoners, Evelina devises a plan to uncover the doctor's true mission. Her aim to protect her fellow inmates, along with uncovering the truth sets Evelina on a path of certain uncertainty, as she finds herself aligned with the very person who began her descent into her current state of arrest.

Set in historical New England, this story offers something for every reader--a thrilling setting, historical figures, romance, and a touch of fantasy. This book has spurred my desire to seek out other works by this author!

Hooooo boy! I’ll tell you one thing, I did not expect this whirlwind rollercoaster when I started this book. This is only the third book in my whole life I finished in one sitting. The other two: Fight Club and Harry Potter/Sorcerer’s Stone.

I’d never divulged much into the “indie reads” genre prior to this book. BUT, I have a weakness for all things scary, gothic, and (strangely enough) the Salem Witch Trials era of American history. For some reason it has always fascinated me, anywhere from the Crucible to American Horror Story. This book 100% did. Not. Disappoint. Oh my goodness the moment I started reading it was like I was magically sucked into the book and thrown right in the middle of Philadelphia, on the cobbled streets wearing a bonnet on my head.
The language was true to its time period and absolutely beautiful. It wasn’t difficult to read, and sometimes I’d wish it had been a little more authentic, but it was a nice in-between of “what kind of English is Hawthorne using??” and something along the lines of a young/new adult historical fantasy. Aside from the few minor spelling errors (woman refers to one lady and women refers to two or more), I fell in love with the dialect in this story.

Speaking of falling in love... is it possible to fall in love with a character when you’re only given the description of his eyes and one of his hands? Good, because I did. I didn’t expect a love story precariously placed in the middle of this book but it made it all the sweeter. Despite his minor/medium role in the story, Birdy ended up being my favorite character... yes, even with his unfortunate, ironic nickname.

The ending (no spoilers ahead, I promise!) was a bit unrealistic for me, I was expecting a bit more “To Kill a Mockingbird,” -esque, but there are absolutely no complaints about how this story played out.

I was a bit hesitant to read this one, historical fictions and indie reads aren’t always my go-to, but this little gem probably ranks in my top 5 favorite books I’ve read this year.

My, oh, my, what a beautiful, memorable and highly engaging book, which swirls magic around the reader like a shimmering mist. I adored every moment of it; from the imaginative, classically gothic and engrossing plot to the compelling characters, each of which holds the reader’s attention, but none more than the leading lady; Evalina (Isn’t that the most beautiful name?) she really stole every scene, and solidly holds the intricate plot together.
I have to mention the cover, I know you should never judge a book by it’s cover but; isn’t it the most alluring and eye catching cover, I love that gothic-ish look, it shouts that there is something very special within the pages.
Set in Philadelphia in 1854, working in a tailor shop along with her brother, Evalina is left to run the shop as the manager is more absent then present, it is during one of these times where the shop owner is absent that Evalina’s world crashes around her. Her whole life hang’s in the blink of an eye, when a demanding, vile and narcissistic customer walks through the door only for one thing to lead to another the customer; Dr. Dowdrick murders Evalina’s brother, sending her into such a rage that she summons a swarm of wasps and in the midst of what turns out to a moment of buzzing hell she stabs the evil Dowdrick with a pair of scissors, leaving her running for her life.
Finding her self caught and thrown into the notorious and squalid; Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary. On a charge of murder and witchcraft, and anyone who knows their history will know that Witchcraft alone cold be a death sentence for any woman with or without a trail. Evalina soon uses her extraordinary powers and hones her skills for communicating and summoning small animals to her.
So, our Evalina is in real danger, but even more so when she learns that the very man she thought she had stabbed to death is actually alive and now experiment on inmates. I have to say that every time this horrible man is in a scene I get Goosebumps, he sends shivers of pure hate running down my spine, but that just proves what a brilliantly written book this is.
I won’t say too much, only will our lovely Evalina be able to free herself from the death sentence she has found herself in, and in the process reveal the injustice and evil that is surround her and that prison?
Evalina Stowe is a fabulous character, a marvellous heroine who really captured the readers heart, you will be rooting for her all way through as she battles for what is right in the dark, murky and dangerous world she lives in.
I cannot say enough great things about this amazing book, it’s gripping and atmospheric, the historical detail is second to none, I loved the magical/paranormal element it really gives it a fresh and original hook that keeps you turning the pages. The writing is fluid and engaging, this is the first I have read by Catherine Stine and I thoroughly enjoyed stepping into her world and will definitely be reading more from her in the future.
Overall, a captivating and evocative book, the story flows with ease taking the reader on a vivid and tantalising journey, each character is brilliantly crafted whether they are the heroes or the villains each one brings something vital to the story. I cannot recommend this enough, anyone who loves a more edgier historical will love this!

WITCH OF THE WILD BEASTS
By Catherine Stone

Well I must first start by saying I liked this original take on a different type of Witch that I’ve come to associate with that word. This was a charming Historical Magical Fantasy with its own unique version of magic that had me continually being surprised. The rich detail and the main character is one whom you grow a kinship with. I like that the chapters were perfect in length and it kept me moving pretty quickly. Told through the main character’s viewpoint, kept it easy to read, organized and gives a great perspective of everything going on.

Evalina Stowe, alone with her brother, Todd, after the deaths of her parents from Cholera, finds herself supporting them both. Working at a tailor’s, things go awry when an upset patron, Dr. Dowdrick begins to choke Todd over some garments that accidentally fell on the floor. The madness and protectiveness Evalina felt made her so angry she felt a buzz of wasps surround her as she grabs a pair of scissors to stop the Dr. before he kills her brother. As her anger grows fierce, the wasps, as if summoned & directed, go and attack the Dr. while Evalina makes the scissors plunge into the Dr.’s side. She then realizes that in his anger, the Dr. did indeed kill her brother. She has no choice but to run to escape being sent to prison.

Living on the streets, she must learn to beg and find places to sleep. She looks back and is confused as to what happened at the Tailor’s. She also reminisces how growing up, birds had also taken an interest in her but she still doesn’t make much of it.

She eventually finds work on a farm working for an unkind man. During a upheaval with her boss, a flock of birds come to her defense and it doesn’t end well. Evalina is then declared a witch and sent to Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary. There she meets other prisoners and makes some beastly friends. Here it comes to her what may actually be occurring in her life with these beasts and is learning the ultimate power she actually possesses.

One day as the prisoners are working in the gardens, a familiar figure is introduced. When Evalina looks up, it is no other than Dr. Dowdrick, the man who killed her brother and the Dr. she thought she had killed. She finds out what his true intentions are for visiting and it’s risking the lives of prisoners for his own gain. Evalina is determined to find out what exactly is going on and to put a stop before more harm can come to others.

Witch of the Wild Beast by Catherine Stine is a captivating historical, paranormal/mystical, fiction.

1854 Philadelphia, Evalina Stowe, is working at a tailor shop along with her brother. The shop owner is absent more often than not. Leaving Eva to attend the front desk and her younger brother to work in the back of the store. Evalina life changes in an instant, when a customer named, Dr. Dowdrick enters the tailor shop. Demanding and malicious, Dowdrick attacks her brother, in her heightened state, she summons a swarm of wasp who attacks the doctor. Evalina does the unthinkable and stabs him, with a pair of scissors. Leaving behind her dead brother and the doctor, she runs for her very life. With little food or shelter, Evalina barely stays alive on the streets. When a chance for real pay and food and lodging becomes available, she grabs this opportunity, to have a similarly outcome as she had with the doctor.
This time charges of murder and witchcraft are brought against her. She sentenced to Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary. Coming to terms with her unexplained powers that enable her to summon small animals and insects.
In confinement in the prison certain things comes to light, and a revelation that the sinister Dr. Dowdrick is very much alive and experimenting on inmates at the Eclectic Medical School.
Evalina and her new found friends must band together to shed light on the
Dr. Dowdricks vile and evil ways to his own peers at the Philadelphia’s premium doctors showcase.
This magical infused historical fiction by the immensely talented author, is one I couldn’t put down. The author has created an enduring heroine. I devoured this one as fast as I could and was completely drawn into the life, of Evalina Stowe.

A wonderful protagonist that touches your heart with the compassion she shows to people around her as puts aside her own discomforts to go above and beyond for others. The storyline and three dimensional characters keep the books pace brisk, as you are invested as the tale unfolds. Catherine Stine, writing is smooth an effortless, making for a creative and engaging story.

A Memorable and delightful book, which completely captivated me. This is my first read by this notable author and definitely won’t be my last.

When an enraged client murders her younger brother, Evalina Stowe's anger and grief calls a swarm of wasps to sting him. When a cruel boss beats her, her birds swoop in for revenge. She's jailed for witchcraft in Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary in 1854 and must endure solitary confinement. The villain who murdered her brother is still alive and doing horrible experiments on the prisoners. Evalina must find a way to stop him with the help of her friends in the prison and learning to control her powers. But will she unmask his guilt or find herself the victim?

A marvelously written historical paranormal read! The author does a terrific job transporting the reader back to 1854 and showing the harsh realities of life in that time. A time where even small children are sent to jail for their crimes. We see the world through Evalina's eyes, the cruelties and the wonders. She is a strong and lovable young woman, and my heart went out to her from the very start. I loved her feisty neighbor in the prison, Madame Dolly Rouge, and the patience of Amity who visits Evalina to help with her penance. Birdy swept me off my feet too. There are bits where we see famous people like Charles Dickens and Dr. Thomas Mutter. What they contributed to history wove well with this story. Highly recommended!

She can control wild beasts and insects to do her bidding. When a cruel doctor comes into the shop where Evalina and her young brother Todd work, he strangles Todd to death just because Todd dropped his cloths on the floor. Evalina stabs him with a scissors and runs because no one would believe her about what the doctor did. She eventually finds work on a farm and befriends the birds she is supposed to kill, and when the farmer confronts her one of the birds flys down his thoat and he dies. She is imprisons as a witch. But while in prison she makes several friends, finds love, and with the help of her friends (and her animal friends) is able to get justice for her brother Todd and the prisoners the doctor has experimented on. This is not your typical kind of story about a witch. I'm not usually a fan of historical books, but throwing in the paranormal aspect worked to keep me invested in the story. It was easy to read and had some great secondary characters. Evalina, having witnessed the death of her brother, becomes an extremely determined and fierce character that you will be cheering for her to succeed.

I enjoyed all the careful plotting and dark twists brought about to create Evalina’s story!

I really liked the layered use of historical figures help lend an even more authentic feel of times past and struggling times of the witch hunt days.

Not my normal go-to read but I was very quickly transported into the past with Evalina and I found it very enjoyable! I’m glad to have had the chance to give this one a read!

Holy moly! So the first 2 chapters had me thinking, hmmm, maybe not. After that I just about couldn't put it down. I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I love animals so check. Loved the somewhat historical aspect of it, check again. Set in a prison, has a good witch involved, just so much of interest to me.
It's a fairly quick read but still pretty detail oriented. The secondary characters were mostly interesting or at least doing interesting things. This is a keeper!
One more thing, the author sent me a handwritten card with my book. She also signed the book and sent me a great bookmark. Those were sweet, lovely touches.

3.5 stars rounded up to four.
I am still new to the genre of historical fiction so I find it takes me a little bit to really get into the story. Even though I struggled a bit I still really enjoyed the story and I couldn't help but fall for the main character. She is a fantastic heroine and you really find yourself rooting for her throughout the book. The author did a really great job with transporting you back to the mid 1800's. The penitentiary setting was very interesting to read about. The story was engaging, the characters were great and it was well paced.⁣⁣ If you like murder, mystery and magic, then I think you'd enjoy this story. Also, this cover is beautiful! ⁣⁣

Witch of the Wild Beasts is an interesting historical fiction read.

Evalina Stowe is a well-developed character who is intriguing and has a supernatural bond with animals. The author has combined fact with fiction in the portrayal of some historical figures and Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary. This story is well written and compelling, with murder, imprisonment, and vengeance.

I am looking forward to reading more books by this new-to-me author.
I read and reviewed this book with no obligation.

As I absolutely adored Witch of Cards, this was an instant buy for me and Catherine Stine has 100% delivered.

Witch of the Wild Beasts is a beautiful story and is whilst being absolutely heartbreaking is also completely heartwarming. Evalina is such a loveable protagonist and her rag tag group of friends are just as interesting. I could absolutely read a book dedicated to Dolly!

Overall, a fantastic read.

Eighteen year old Evalina Stowe watched in horror as her customer, Dr. Dowdrick strangles Evalina's brother for dropping his suit at the tailor shop they work for in nineteenth century Philedelphia.  Evalina stabs Dr. Dowdrick with scissors as a swarm of angry wasps descends upon him.  After her brother's death, Evalina is on the run.  She finds work scaring birds from a field, but finds it is easier to befriend the birds.  When her boss confronts her, one of Evalina's birds chokes him and Evalina is imprisoned at Eastern State Penitentiary for murder.  While imprisoned, Evalina practices controlling her emotions to call upon the animals that visit her cell.  Soon she is able to give directions to mice, birds and bugs.  Evalina also discovers that Dr. Dowdrick is still alive and is running cruel experiments on prisoners, including Evalina's cell neighbor.  With the help of her animals friends and other inmates including a  Welshman named Birdie, Evalina hatches a plan to use her gifts as well as Dr. Dowdrick's greed for his own demise while gaining her freedom back.

I was really pulled in by the premise of Witch of the Wild Beasts, a 19th century witch in America who is in Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary.  Evalina's character is strong, smart and resourceful.  While her powers were integral to the story, they weren't a magic cure all to her problems, Evalina still had to think on her own and use her own willpower.  I was very interested in the setting of Eastern State Penitentiary and the medical advancements of the time, especially with women's health. The author uses rich historical detail and elements of the time period to create the setting of Eastern State Penitentiary. The descriptions of the prison's special architecture allowed me to easily envision the space that Evalina was in.  I was amazed that Charles Dickens actually did visit the Penitentiary as well as medical advancements in sanitation, midwifery, and plastic surgery that were developed in this time period.  The writing and plot moves very quickly, which didn't lead to a lot of character development other than Evalina herself, but did keep the pace moving very swiftly and kept my interest high. With this, the romance wasn't as developed, however this was not the focus of the story.  Overall, Witch of the Wild Beasts is a historical fantasy with a strong female lead and touches of magic and romance.

Witch of the Wild Beasts by Catherine Stine is fantasy/historical fiction about a girl in Philadelphia who has been sentenced to two years for allegedly calling beast and having them do her dirty work for her. The first instance was when she "called" a swarm of wasps to attack the man who was killing her brother. Believing him dead, she ran and was not arrested until a bird strangled a man who was attempting to beat her, by ramming his head and body down the man's throat. She hadn't really, although she had made pets of the birds. She hadn't realized her power until then. In prison she manages to make friends of mice and insects as well as some people until she discovers a plot wherein a malicious doctor was experimenting on the inmates, to heir detriment.

This was an interesting story, looking at a multitude of things from a different perspective. Evalina was bright and hard-working. Her parents were dead and she had been responsible for her small brother. She had responded too slowly and he was dead. She was not a criminal or a witch but the story enumerates how people made both of those accusations and convinced others, simply for their own gain. It also illustrates the nefarious hold unscrupulous medicine men have over an unsuspecting public. She discovers than she can manipulate animals, but more importantly she can manipulate greed. This is in many ways a morality tale of the unfairness of prison, the greed of public officials, and the power than people have over one another. It was an intriguing and interesting story.

I cracked this book opened not knowing that I'd be so utterly gripped that I'd not be able to put it down. Evalina is the kind of character who you can feel sympathy, empathy, and adoration for. That's such a great feat to create a character that has so much inner strength yet still a vulnerability that readers can feel as well. As if watching her little brother die isn't enough, you fast get the feeling that's only the start and it is, but I never imagined the ride I'd be taken on.

The jail setting was claustrophobic and that gave me the ability to see the light along with Eva on the few outside times, and those times... that's where we meet my love, Birdy. All the secondary characters had that same rich depth that stole my heart as slowly a band of unlikely people formed into something beautiful and your heart hurt and hoped they could find some happy ending.

There were also some villainous characters who were also pitch perfect, drawing out my ire as they should, but not all of them were so black and white. I loved the way they regarded one toward the end, I can't really say much as I don't want to spoil the way things build up. They build up into a tight ball and as things reached the pivotal point my own heartbeat picked up.

Loved it! Love the wrap up as well... so much yes. So satisfying.

The magic system also had a real feeling to it, especially since it wasn't something that came easily or was thrown around as an easy solution.

If you are hungry for a character-driven, historical fiction, with a great twisty plot, and a dash of magic so well written you won't question its existence, then this for you.

This book is just so cool! I mean not only is the cover gorgeous, but the story is just so interesting! I love the mix of fantasy and historical fiction along with the setting of this one. I have a thing for books set in either asylums or penitentiaries way back when. They were just such terrible places and I think it is important to shed light on the horridness that was these locations.

The magic system in this book was done really well. It was there but it wasn’t oversaturated throughout the story, which made it fit better. It was honestly such an intriguing story and I couldn’t put the book down. It was a historical and fantasy but also had a little bit of suspense to it. But then again I do love everything gothic.

The characters were all so engaging. There was such a varying cast of good and evil that you were kept on the edge of your seat throughout the read. I would definitely recommend this book to so many different types of readers as I could see it appealing to many different genre lovers.
