Glenfarclas
(glen-FAR-class)
Glenfarclas is one of the few Scottish distilleries that is privately owned. Founded by Robert Hay in 1836 the distillery has seen six generations of the Grant family distil whisky here. Glenfarclas uses water from springs of the Ben Rinnes.
The distillery had several rebuilds and extensions, it was rebuilt in 1897 and extended and modernized in the 1960s. The whisky is predominantly matured in sherry casks which gives its whisky a particularly sweet and refined sherry character. The distillery also has a great visitor centre, the interior is clad with timbers from a sailing vessel.
Glenfarclas has a huge range of bottlings ranging from core range "standard" expressions to specialist bottlings. In particular, the Family Cask series featured single cask bottlings from a wide range of years dating from the 1950s up to the early 2000s.
